New York’s creative economy is large and diverse, and the policies and systems that support it remain fragmented across sectors, regions, and government. This project brings stakeholders together to build a shared framework and plan for strengthening the creative economy across New York State.
NYS Creative Economy Framework
The Problem
Creative work intersects with cultural policy, labor, education, housing, and economic development, but these systems rarely work together. Regional differences, fragmented responsibilities, and the absence of shared priorities make coordinated statewide action difficult.
The Approach
The project builds a shared framework as the foundation for a New York State Creative Economy Plan.
DEFINE
Develop a shared Creative Economy Framework for New York State that defines what the creative economy includes, who participates, what forms of value it creates, and the issues a statewide plan should address.
ALIGN
Establish shared language, priorities, and a framework that recognizes nonprofit and commercial activity, different forms of creative labor, regional differences, and Indigenous nations and economies across New York State.
ENGAGE
Engage stakeholders across sectors and regions to test and strengthen the framework, bringing different perspectives and forms of knowledge into a shared understanding of New York’s creative economy.
TRANSLATE
Translate the framework into shared priorities, indicators, governance, and a roadmap for statewide action, creating a foundation for the development and implementation of a New York State Creative Economy Plan.
